NHB Reopening

REOPENING OF THE NATURAL HISTORY BUILDING — 2017 EVENTS

rendering of building

The complete renovation of Natural History Building on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is now complete!  During the past three years, the building was completely gutted and rebuilt inside, at a cost of $72M.  We’ll be fully operational in the building when the Fall 2017 term begins.

NHB will be the home for the School of Earth, Society, and Environment (SESE), and its three departments (the Department of Geology; the Department of Geography and GIS; and the Department of Atmospheric Sciences), and will house offices as well state-of-the-art research labs and classrooms, and a spectacular SESE Student Commons.

SESE and its departments will host two events in association with the reopening of the building.

ILLINOIS HOMECOMING — Saturday, October 28, 2017

From 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. (after the football game), we will host an open house in NHB, allowing visitors to wander through the building and enjoy the visual impact of how new and old architectural elements merge.  Students posted at locations around the building will explain how facilities will be used. This event will be open to everyone

SESE’s NHB DEDICATION EVENT Saturday, November 4, 2017

SESE and its departments will host tours of the building in the morning, and then a lunch for current and past students, faculty, and staff.  We chose a non-football weekend, so that lodging will be available in Champaign-Urbana for out-of-town visitors.  (We have reserved a block of rooms in the Illini Union.)  After lunch, we will host an Afternoon Symposium with speakers and a panel from all components of the school, to converse about the past, present, and future of studies related to the Earth, its atmosphere, its environment, and its human dimensions at the University of Illinois.

All alumni and friends, and students, staff, and faculty of SESE, Atmospheric Sciences, Geography & GIS, and Geology are welcome! We hope you can join us!

For further information on these events please contact Lana Holben, the SESE office administrator, at  holben@illinois.edu.   Please RSVP at https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/1696731
